Sustainable Rural Economies

This chapter provides indicators of economic and social conditions in rural communities in and near forest and rangeland areas.

Associated Indicators

Wood product manufacturing employees

The number of employees associated with wood manufacturing in a region or community gives an indication of the importance of the industry, especially when compared to total employment or with other industries (e.g., tourism, agriculture).

Years of education

This indicator measures the years of formal education of the population of rangeland-dependent communities. It is an important measure of the human (and to a lesser extent social) capital available for sustaining a social group. Moreover, communities whose populations have higher levels of education may tend to have increased ability to recognize and respond to problems on local rangelands.
