5: Maintenance of forest contribution to global carbon cycles

Forests are renewable and one of the largest terrestrial reservoirs of biomass and soil carbon. They have an important role in global carbon cycles as sinks and sources of carbon. Carbon stocks in forests include above ground biomass, below ground biomass, dead and decaying organic matter and soil carbon. Carbon is also stored in wood products. Global climate change could have significant impacts on the structure, distribution, productivity, and health of temperate and boreal forests as well as impacts on forest carbon stocks and fluxes, and the prevalence of forest fires, disease and insect outbreaks, and storm damages.

Forest management practices also affect the carbon cycle and fluxes. Deforestation has a negative impact, but management activities that maintain and enhance the carbon stored in forests and forest products over the medium to long term can make a positive contribution to mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. In addition, biomass from forests can be used as a substitute for fossil fuels thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Spring Runoff from Major Watersheds (April – July)

Evaluate impact of warmer climate conditions on spring runoff, timing of peak flows, and seasonal water availability. This is calculated as the percent of the total water year runoff derived in Spring (April – July). Spring warming releases water as snowmelt. Recent studies by DWR show a declining trend in Spring runoff that is indicative of warmer winters and earlier Spring warming. This has implications on water availability across a range of beneficial uses. In addition, it can lead to reduced base flows and that may lead to early drying of forest vegetation and effect wildfire conditions.

Total forest ecosystem carbon pools and fluxes

Total carbon pools and fluxes are measures of the current status of carbon storage in California forests. The total carbon pool in a forest consists of above ground living and dead plant materials, forest floor litter and plant materials and soil carbon. Living and dead plant materials are quantified in data provided in the latest Forest Inventory and Analysis report. Information on other carbon storage components may be extrapolated from research conducted in California or elsewhere. Carbon fluxes are defined as the balance between carbon sequestration and emissions from forests.

Total forest product carbon pools and fluxes

Quantifying the storage of carbon in wood products constitutes an element of the total carbon life cycle. Life cycle analysis will provide the estimates of carbon storage versus emissions in wood products.
